“Move over, Macarena. Disney Channel is hoping to start a new dance craze timed to “Platypus Day,” a holiday created by the cable network to celebrate Perry the Platypus, the teal-colored, duck-billed secret agent from Phineas and Ferb.
This year’s Platypus Day, which takes place on Saturday, March 3, will feature the introduction of “The Platypus Walk,” a surf-rock tune that comes with an accompanying dance choreographed by Rosero McCoy (Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam). The song will debut today on Radio Disney, and Disney Channel’s website will include a tutorial to the dance.
Disney Channel will air 11 hours of Phineas and Ferb episodes from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on March 3, timed to the “holiday,” while sister network Disney XD will air 12 hours. Both channels also debut a music video for “The Platypus Walk,” featuring Disney Channel sitcom stars from Good Luck Charlie, Shake It Up, Jessie, Kickin’ It and Austin & Ally.
Disney will also celebrate “Platypus Day” via events at its 220 Disney Stores and on Radio Disney stations. The event is the latest brand extension for Phineas and Ferb, which has already spawned merchandise, a TV-movie, soundtracks and an upcoming feature film. Phineas was the No. 1 animated series among kids 6-11 and 9-14 in 2011.
